About Collie Dogs

Whomever has heard the words "Lassie come home!" is familiar with the Collie. A breed made famous by television's beloved "Lassie", this centuries-old breed hails from the Scottish Isles, where it was used for herding livestock in the Highlands. It is thought that a drop of Borzoi blood may be responsible for the Collie's fine head. Long before "Lassie" hit the airwaves, the Collie was popular in Europe. Queen Victoria kept several Collies at the Royal Kennels at Windsor Palace.  Today's Collie makes a great farm dog for herding livestock - or a great mom's helper to herd children. This intelligent, loyal and affectionate breed makes a great all-round family dog! Agile, athletic and capable, Collies are active, and very eager to please. Collies are very affectionate with their families and those they are familiar with, but can be somewhat reserved with strangers. They are not known to be aggressive or shy.

Collies love to be active, and excel in such activities as agility, flyball, search and rescue - or a demanding game of fetch in the back yard. The breeds intelligence makes it perform extremely well in obedience.

This large sized breed has either a rough (long) or smooth coat which can be sable and white, sable merle and white, blue merle and white, tri-color or mostly white with color markings. Grooming requirements are moderate - a good brushing is needed to keep the rough, dense coat in good shape - especially when shedding.  If you are an active family looking for a wonderful family pet, be sure to take a good look at the Collie! Collies are suited to both city and rural life.
