Pembroke Welsh Corgi History
Originating in Pembrokeshire, Wales, this breed is thought to be the result of cross-breeding between the Cardigan Welsh Corgi, the Shipperke, the Pomeranian and possibly the Lancashire Heeler. It is also thought that the Pembroke Welsh Corgi was used to develop the Swedish Valhund, having been brought back to Scandinavia by Vikings on their way home from plundering the British Isles. "Thought to be" is the operative phrase here, since the Pembroke Welsh Corgi has a history that can be traced back as early as 900 AD, and clear records going back that far do not exist.

The Pembroke measures just 10 to 12 inches at the shoulder and has a short, docked tail. It's medium coat comes in red, sable, fawn, black and tan, with or without white markings.

The Pembroke makes a great family pet in either a country or city setting, provided that it is given plenty of outdoor exercise.
Pembroke Welsh Corgi Exercise Needs
Pembroke Welsh Corgis are a working breed, and enjoy regular exercise. The exercise requirements for this breed are not as high as for some working breeds, but they are in no way sedentary. A long, brisk walk once or twice a day will do wonders for your Corgi's outlook on life, and will go a long way towards your own health and fitness goals. The Corgi's background as a livestock drover means "the more the merrier" when it comes to getting out for that walk! "Herd" your kids away from their x-box 360's or television set and let your Corgi drive them out the door for a good family walk after supper. Make sure you keep your Corgi on his leash - this breed does not always get along well with other dogs or pets.
Pembroke Welsh Corgi Grooming Requirements
Regular brushing keeps the Pembroke Welsh Corgi's smooth, short coat shiny and clean. This should be done at least weekly, since brushing helps with circulation and overall health, is enjoyable for the dog, and will help distribute the coat's natural oils. Nails should be trimmed regularly, and it's also helpful to inspect the ears for mites, yeast and dirt. This breed's erect ears are usually not prone to ear infections as are some of the droopy eared dog breeds, but it doesn't hurt to clean your Corgi's ears periodically with an acidifying cleanser made especially for this purpose.
