About Portuguese Water DogsKnown in it's homeland as "Cao D'Augo", the Portuguese Water Dog is a strong swimmer and diver - the ideal canine companion for the avid water sport enthusiast! The breed originated in the seaports of the Iberian peninsula, where it worked as member of the fishing boat's crew, retrieving fish and fishing gear, acting as messenger, guard and rescue dog, and even (supposedly) shinnying up the odd rope in traditional seaman's fashion. The breed came to North America in the 1960's, and has since found it's way into the hearts and homes of dog lovers throughout the continent. Muscular, brave, loyal and obedient, the Portuguese Water Dogs makes an excellent family pet. They require plenty of exercise, lots of love and proper care and training. The wavy or curly single coat requires regular grooming, but is non-shedding. |
