Introduced
to Europe in the 1930's by Dr. A.R.H. Greig who was practicing medicine in
India, the Tibetan Terrier has since gained popularity world-wide. This
distinctive breed is thought to have originated in the Lost Valley of Tibet,
and was regarded as a holy dog and symbol of good luck by the lamas of
Tibet. Unlike the true terrier, this breed does not take its quarry to
ground, rather it was likely used to herd sheep and may be an ancestor of
the Hungarian Puli. In Tibet, these dogs were never sold, but were given as
cherished gifts. The Tibetan Terrier makes an excellent family pet and
watchdog, and has a very interesting bark, doing well in both urban and
country settings. The long, double coat comes in a variety of colors and
requires regular brushing to keep it tangle-free.
